Choosing the Perfect Wedding Venue – Ballara Receptions

The beautiful wedding of Kat & Theo at Ballara Receptions.

Such a gorgeous venue that we are always happy to visit.

We met Kat & Theo last year at the Ballara Receptions Bridal Expo and they married on the 13th of October this year. The day started with an emotional reveal on the staircase of The Langham, followed by shooting in a few spots throughout the city, and then back to Ballara for the wedding.

Why Are Family Portraits Good for Your Health?

Kylie & Curlers

By now you should all know how much I love shooting family portraits. The desire to capture precious memories and ensure our loved ones have beautiful photographs to look back on is very near and dear to my heart.

But did you know that family portraits can boost your child’s mental heath?

According to psychologists and experts who have studied it over the years, portrait photography can boost children’s self-esteem. Family photography takes this even further by creating a safe space where children feel like they can be themselves and belong within the family unit.

Family portraits that are displayed on the wall or around the home “have a certainty about them and a protecting quality that nurtures a child. It let’s them know where they are in the pecking order and that they are loved and cared for” explains David Krauss (a psychologist from Cleveland, Ohio) to the Huffington Post.

Cathy Lander-Goldberg, a licensed clinical social worker and professional photographer from Missouri, agrees with Krauss, saying “displaying photos prominently in the home sends the message that our family and those in it are important to one another, and we honor the memories we have experienced.”

Additionally, Krauss recommends having photographs of that child with their family placed in the child’s bedroom so it can be among the last things they see before sleep and the first thing they may see before beginning their day.

“It says we love you and care about you. You’re important.”

Shireen Hammond Featured in the AIPP Journal

After winning the AIPP Family Photographer of the year in 2016, Shireen was fortunate enough to be featured in the AIPP journal. Shireen has been a member of the AIPP snice 2000, when she began as a student.

“I woke up on the morning of my 35th birthday and decided I wanted to study photography properly, to become a professional photographer.”

Her career really took off when she started entering the APPA and Epson State Awards.

The write-up, titled “Shireen Hammond: Loving Everything” explores her love for photography and journey to where she is today.

Shireen loves capturing special moments like this one!

While wedding photography is still a passion – she loves working with happy couples to bring their special day back to life through print – Shireen is moving further into portraiture. There a few reasons for this shift.

As explained here, after her father’s passing, Shireen realized she simply didn’t have a single family photo with everyone together. This drove her passion for capturing portraits and special moments between loved ones.

After being diagnosed with cancer in 2013, smack bang in the middle of an industry “shift” for wedding photographers, it was time for a fresh start. As Shireen recovered, she and her husband Robert decided that portrait photography was far less time consuming and had the potential to be more profitable – helping them recoup and cover expenses during such a difficult time.

As Shireen began to feel better, she decided she needed a special project to help her heal and inspire her to begin shooting with passion. That project became ‘Home is Where My Dog Is’ – a gorgeous coffee table book filled with photos of families and their furry friends. It even brought the community together and raised thousands of dollars for a local charity.

Everything has come together and feels comfortable and right”, says Shireen.

Shireen’s understanding of her clients passion for building connections is obvious. She prides herself on learning from each and every person who walks through her life, and passing those lessons on to her family and friends. And she definitely isn’t afraid to have a laugh along the way!

“I shoot what makes me happy and what fills my heart, whatever that may be.”
